Become a Master Guardian

What is the National Master Guardian (NMG) certification and what does it mean?

The National Master Guardian (NMG) designation is the highest certification offered by the Center for Guardianship Certification. The NMG Certification encompasses an array of experience, training and ethical decision making. The NMG identifies a person whose decision making and leadership skills in the profession of Guardianship at the local, state and/or national level set them apart as a model and mentor. A successful NMG practices within the Ethics and Standards of Practice established by the National Guardianship Association, applying those principles to enhance the quality of life of the individuals served. Specific requirements to test for the certification are listed in the application packet, but are minimums. Beyond those requirements, NMGs are those guardians wishing to be not only ethical guardians, but also change agents, raising the level of professionalism in this field.

Experienced NMGs:

  • Train/mentor new guardians;
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills in managing difficult cases;
  • Demonstrate knowledge for a variety of client situations;
  • Locate and utilize resources for a variety of situations, including financial and medical decision making, legal issues, family dysfunction, and available community resources; and
  • Promote quality practice both by example and by participating with others to improve the guardianship system.

We invite you to join us by applying for certification as an NMG if these criteria describe your experience and way of practicing.
